Write in Another Language?
Have you ever dreamt about writing in another language? In our multilingual and multicultural world, we are seeing more and more diverse voices, some of which are authors writing in a language that is not their mother tongue.
Delving into the world of multilingual writing opens up a plethora of creative and professional opportunities. Understanding the intricacies and nuances of writing in a language that isn't your mother tongue can significantly enhance your craft and broaden your audience. Here’s a short guide to help you navigate this exciting journey, drawing on my personal insights and giving practical advice.
Understanding Language and Its Influence
Language is more than just a tool for communication; it shapes our thoughts, behaviours, and perceptions. Exploring the nature of language reveals its profound impact on individuals. Bilingualism, or the ability to speak multiple languages, enhances our cognitive ability and cultural understanding. Travelling to different countries and learning a new language broaden our horizons.
Overcoming Language Prejudice
Writing in another language can also be a challenge. Language prejudice is a phenomenon that is often ignored and rarely spoken about. Mere accents can bring about hostile reactions wherever we are. Biases and discrimination against non-native speakers can be daunting. However, by embracing your unique linguistic background and turning perceived disadvantages into strengths, you can enrich your storytelling.
The Art of Reading and Editing
One of the pillars of effective writing in a new language is extensive reading. Immersing yourself in the literature of the target language can improve vocabulary, grammar, and writing style. Equally important is the role of meticulous editing and proofreading. Attention to detail is essential for non-native writers to gain credibility and respect. Producing clean, error-free copy is a vital aspect of successful writing, be it in your native tongue or in another language.
Utilizing Online Tools
In today’s digital age, writers have access to numerous online tools that can aid in the language learning and writing process. Resources such as online dictionaries, grammar checkers, and writing software like Grammarly are invaluable. These tools help maintain accuracy and consistency in writing, enabling writers to overcome linguistic barriers and refine their craft.
The Value of First Readers
No writer should work in isolation. Having first readers—trusted individuals who can provide constructive feedback—is crucial. For multilingual writers, having a native speaker review your manuscript can be particularly beneficial. This feedback helps catch nuances and idiomatic expressions that might otherwise be missed, ensuring that the writing resonates with its intended audience.
Developing a Writing Routine
Beyond the technical aspects of writing, developing a disciplined writing practice is essential. Establishing a regular writing routine, dealing with the inner critic, and continuously improving your skills are vital components of successful writing. Maintaining a blog is a practical way to practice writing, connect with readers, and build a community. I talk more about how beneficial a regular writing routine is in my book, Write Every Day.
Inspirational Stories and Real-Life Examples
Many writers have successfully navigated the challenges of writing in a language other than their mother tongue. Historical figures like Vladimir Nabokov and Joseph Conrad, and contemporary authors, such as Heidi Amsinck, serve as motivation and proof that multilingualism can be a powerful tool in a writer’s arsenal. In an interview with The British Council, the Turkish author Elif Shafak, who writes in both her native tongue and English said,
“Every new language is an additional zone of existence. As I commute between Turkish and English I pay attention to words that cannot be translated directly. I think about not only words and meanings, but also absences and gaps. Strangely, over the years I have come to understand that sometimes distance brings you closer, stepping out of something helps you to see that thing better. Writing in English does not pull me away from Turkey; just the opposite, it brings me closer.”
